Science and Progress-Tony Oursler- week 5

New York 1996
'Eyes' 1996

Research Tony Oursler's projection sculpture to identify some of the ideas and methods he uses in his work.

How do you think the Enlightenment concepts of Science, progress, reason, individualism, empiricism, universalism, freedom and secularism can be applied to Oursler's work?

Refer to pages 96 and 97 in the ALVC handbook for the full list of key ideas of the Enlightenment. Also use Youtube, the internet and the library to research Oursler's work.

  1. Reflecting on pieces that I have seen from Tony Oursler, I find that they are of a larger scale in which I perceive as a broader aspect of art today. In relation to this, identifying ideas of enlightenment and those that follow, I find that there is truth in how he portrays the more distorted sculptures that he produces.

Tony Oursles work as he describes as being non-living objects is influenced a lot by the media. Using projectors to enlarge images the "technique is employed in a totally different manner" to express the dramatic impact in which his pieces have on the viewer.

Appropriate themes that I believe that describes his unusual paintings like these would consist of reason, science etc. The concepts and message portrayed can be used to virtually acknowledge his thought and influences, which are morally based upon clear experiences.

I think and feel that Tony reflects the negativity of how the media has/is influencing todays generations to become what they think they should be doing.I also believe he composes images and videos concentrated around the obsession of "glits and glam" or this perfect image and his reason to distort them for me is like a wake up call that this is reality.
