Week 6 last blog for semester 2-Barbara Kruger
American conceptual/pop artistBarbara Kruger is internationally renowned for her signature black, white and red poster-style works of art that convey in-your-face messages on women's rights and issues of power. Coming out of the magazine publishing industry, Kruger knows precisely how to capture the viewer's attention with her bold and witty photomurals displayed on billboards, bus stops and public transportation as well as in major museums and galleries wordwide. She has edited books on cultural theory, including Remaking History for the Dia Foundation, and has published articles in the New York Times, Artforum, and other periodicals. Monographs on her work include Love for Sale, We Won't Play Nature to Your Culture and others. She is represented in New York by Mary Boone Gallery. A major exhibition of her work will be presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in fall 1999, and at the Whitney Museum in New York in 2000.

I have researched how Krugers work has changed and how she was influenced hugely by her political and social concerns. I feel that her work explores what people are afriad to voice for themselves of questions that are answered. Her voice, beliefs and ideas are portrayed in her images and these challenge the mainstream media, in some way i feel she exploits them which is awesome.
ReplyDeleteA work that kruger installed was the video. film, audio and projection work. It is described as being the "kindnesses and brutalities of social life and about how we are to one another"
The audience experiences a "sense of certainty with the world". When reading an artical about her work and viewing not only her "posters" but her installations, I found that her work attracts immediate attention of the viewers with her bold and unspoken statements that we dont see or hear of in todyas society. The images are like a cherry on top though that just really gets you thinking about what she is trying accomplish.
Sometimes I think about how Kruger has planted this seed of thought and from there we can either forget about it or do something about it???????????? I dont actually know.
She uses bold statments and as read she wants people to be addressed from all sides of the room.
